Junior high school teacher caught for taking crystal meth

Police in East Java's Bangkalan district have caught a junior high school teacher on charge of consuming crystal methamphetamine (shabu-shabu).

The suspect was caught while taking crystal meth along with his four friends at a neighborhood watch post (poskamling) in Pocong village, Bangkalan district, the chief of the drug unit of the Bangkalan district police, Adj. Comsr. Hery Kristanto said here on Sunday.

Kristanto said the 46-year old suspect, identified by his initial as M, is a teacher of state junior high school SMPN 1 in Kokop sub-district.

The suspect told a team of investigators that he was tempted by his friends to take the contraband.

"The other four suspects ran away when police officers were raiding the post so only one of the five suspects was arrested," he said.

During the raid, the police also seized 0.50 gram of crystal meth, a cigarette lighter and a burner.

M is charged with violating article 112 paragraph 1 of law number 35 of 2009 on narcotics. If found guilty, he can be sentenced to a minimum of 4 years and a maximum of 12 years in jail and fined Rp800 million. (ant/mar)
